What does a live wedding painter actually do on the day?
A live wedding painter typically arrives one to two hours before the reception begins. Here's what the day looks like:
Setup: The artist sets up their easel, canvas and materials in a spot with a good view of the scene — usually near the dance floor, the head table or an area that captures the venue's architecture and atmosphere.
Painting during the reception: While you dance, toast, eat and celebrate, the artist paints. Guests wander over to watch, which creates a natural talking point and adds a unique atmosphere to the evening. Children especially love it.
The reveal: At the end of the reception — or sometimes at a specific moment the couple has chosen — the finished painting is revealed. This is often one of the most emotional moments of the entire wedding day.
Delivery: The painting is carefully packaged and delivered to the couple's home once it has fully dried — usually within a few weeks of the wedding.
What scene does the artist paint?
This depends on the artist and the couple's wishes, but most live wedding painters focus on one of the following:
The couple during their first dance

How long does the painting take?
Most live wedding paintings are completed in 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the canvas and the complexity of the scene. Larger canvases naturally take more time.
The painting doesn't need to be 100% finished at the reveal — many artists (myself included) complete the final details in the days following the wedding, ensuring the piece is as refined and polished as possible before delivery.
Does the artist get in the way of the photographer or videographer?
This is one of the most common questions couples ask — and the answer is no. A professional live wedding painter is used to working in a busy environment and knows how to stay out of the way.
In fact, many photographers and videographers love having a live painter at the wedding — it creates wonderful moments to capture, from guests gathering around the easel to the emotional reveal at the end of the night.
I always coordinate with the photography and videography team in advance to make sure everyone has the space they need.
What size is the painting?
Canvas sizes vary depending on the package. At Penélope Servera Studio, paintings range from 46×55cm (a more intimate, portrait-focused composition) to 60×80cm (a wider scene that captures the venue).
Larger canvases allow for more detail — the stone walls of a Mallorcan finca, the floral arrangements, the light coming through the windows. Smaller canvases are more focused and intimate, perfect for couples who want the painting to feel like a portrait of them rather than a scene.
What happens to the painting afterwards?
Once the painting has fully dried it is carefully packaged and shipped directly to the couple's home, anywhere in the world.
Many couples frame their painting and hang it in their living room, bedroom or hallway. It becomes the first piece of art they chose together as a married couple — something that will be in their home for decades, and eventually passed down to their children.
How much does live wedding painting cost?
Live wedding painting is a bespoke, handmade service — and the investment reflects that. Prices vary depending on the artist, the canvas size, travel costs and additional options like framing.
